What to Wear to Chemotherapy – Comfort Tips for Sessions

Chemotherapy is usually administered in cycles over several months. Depending on how the drugs are delivered — through an IV line or a port — you may need to make small adjustments to your clothing to stay comfortable during treatment.

Building a small, practical wardrobe for your chemotherapy sessions can make a big difference in your comfort and peace of mind.

Comfort Should Be the Priority

You may spend 2–6 hours (or more) in a clinic chair during each session. Choose soft, breathable, loose-fitting clothes that don’t restrict movement or press on your treatment site.

Tops to Wear

  • Button-down shirts or blouses: Ideal for easy access to IV lines in the arm.
  • V-neck or zip-front tops: Great for visibility and access if you have a port in your chest.
  • Loose T-shirts or tunics: Avoid tight necklines or sleeves that are hard to roll up.

Bottoms to Wear

  • Stretchy waistbands: Opt for leggings, sweatpants, or yoga pants.
  • Avoid belts or zippers: These can be uncomfortable when sitting for long periods.

Dress in Layers

Clinic temperatures vary, and some patients experience chills or hot flashes during treatment.

Bring a light sweater, cardigan, or shawl that you can easily remove or add. A soft blanket can also help you stay cozy.

Helpful Accessories

  • Comfortable socks or slippers: Keep feet warm and avoid cold floors.
  • Travel pillow: Supports your neck during long infusions.
  • Soft scarf: Can cover a port site or provide warmth.

What to Avoid

  • Tight clothing that restricts circulation
  • Fabrics that cause irritation (e.g., wool against sensitive skin)
  • Overly complicated outfits that are hard to take off
  • Jewelry near the IV or port site

Remember, there’s no “right” way to dress — the goal is to feel relaxed and supported. Choose clothes that make you feel like yourself, even on tough days.
